ON ON PRAGMATIC FUNCTIONS OF REPETITION IN STAND-UP COMEDY—— A CASE STUDY OF YANG LI’S PERFORMANCE IN ROCK & ROAST

The linguistic phenomenon of discourse repetition, characterized by repeating previously articulated dialogues or narratives in contemporaneous or diachronic performances, is widely observed in recent stand-up comedy. This study aims to amass and scrutinize instances of discourse repetition across Yang Li's performances throughout three seasons of Rock & Roast utilizing Searle's theory of indirect speech acts. The objective is to encapsulate the pragmatic functionalities of this linguistic occurrence within the stand-up comedy context. The findings reveal that the phenomenon of discourse repetition embodies two distinct levels of pragmatic functionalities across contemporaneous and diachronic performances, which are localized pragmatic functionalities and holistic pragmatic functionalities. In contemporaneous performances, local pragmatic functions of discourse repetition can be primarily categorized into four types: satirical, educational, critical, and promotional. Meanwhile, within the realm of diachronic performances, three key holistic pragmatic functions emerge, namely, facilitating audience memory, inciting textual innovation, and shaping performative style.
