A Study on Polyphonic Characters of Elementary level in Chinese Proficiency Grading Standards for International Chinese Language Education and Teaching methods

Abstract

Polyphonic characters have always been one of the studying difficulties in the acquisition of international students and teachers’ teaching.

Chinese Proficiency Grading Standards for International Chinese Language Education

was officially implemented on July 1, 2021. International Chinese education has faced with new opportunities. The research in this paper has three main objectives. Firstly, it involves the simple classification and organization of polyphonic characters found in the Elementary Level Chinese Character List of

the Standard

. Secondly, a questionnaire survey was conducted to assess the learning situation of polyphonic characters among Thai learners at the elementary level of Chinese. Thirdly, addressing the challenges faced by Thai learners in the process of learning polyphonic characters, the paper provides some reference suggestions for teaching strategies in the context of polyphonic characters in Thailand. The survey results reveal a total of 193 polyphonic characters in the Elementary Level Chinese Character List of

the Standard

, and Thai learners demonstrate instances of misreading and misuse during the learning process. As a result, the study recommends that teachers enhance the teaching of polyphonic characters during the early stages of Chinese language education.
