A Survey of International Students in Chinese Universities in the Perspective of Their Use of and Demands on Foreign-Oriented Chinese Learning Dictionaries

Abstract

A foreign-oriented Chinese learning dictionary is a dictionary written specifically for learners whose native language is not Chinese, also called an outward-looking Chinese dictionary. The corresponding inward-oriented Chinese dictionaries are written for learners whose native language is Chinese. Therefore, in the process of compiling a foreign-oriented Chinese learning dictionary, we should take into account their cognitive rules, try to meet the needs of non-native speakers of Chinese, and avoid providing dictionary information based only on the subjective judgment of the editor. In this paper, we conducted a questionnaire survey on international students in China in order to find out more comprehensively the basic usage and related needs of international students as a foreign-oriented Chinese learning dictionary．
