Abstract

The Origin and Components of the “Yua Pi” Dance in Nora of the Khun Uppatham Narakorn Lineage This qualitative research aims to study the historical background and components of the “Yua Pi” dance in Nora of the Khun Uppatham Narakorn lineage. The research methodology includes data collection from documents, archaeological texts, and in-depth interviews with senior Nora masters, successors of the Nora art, performing arts scholars, and other relevant individuals. Additionally, observations of rehearsals and actual performances within the Khun Uppatham Narakorn lineage were conducted. The collected data were analyzed through anthropological and performing arts perspectives to ensure accurate and comprehensive findings.

The study reveals that the Yua Pi dance process in the Nora performances of the Khun Uppatham Narakorn lineage is rooted in traditional Southern Thai Nora dance, which has been influenced by religious beliefs and local rituals. The Yua Pi dance plays a crucial role in Nora performances, as it invites audience participation and enhances the performance atmosphere, making it more engaging, sacred, and enjoyable. Furthermore, the Yua Pi dance in this lineage has been shaped by social and cultural factors. Historically, it was associated with rituals for auspicious purposes and was used as a medium to convey historical narratives and local beliefs. However, in contemporary performances, the Yua Pi dance has been adapted to suit stage performances while still preserving the distinctive movements inherited through the Khun Uppatham Narakorn lineage. The findings indicate that the Yua Pi dance is an essential component of Nora performances in this lineage and represents a valuable cultural heritage that deserves preservation and promotion as a traditional Thai performing art. This study not only provides an in-depth understanding of the Yua Pi dance process but also offers practical applications for developing Thai performing arts curricula. Additionally, it serves as a resource for the transmission of knowledge to younger generations interested in Nora performance.
