Contemporary Lacquerware Painting with Rak Sai (Lacquer Glaze) Preparation on Local Materials Inspired by Southern Folklife

Abstract

The contemporary lacquerware painting inspired by the lifestyle of the southern Thai ways of life aims to 1) create a series of artworks titled “contemporary lacquerware painting with rak sai (lacquer glaze) preparation on local materials inspired by southern folklife,” using the lacquerware technique to stage for base preparation from the materials southern region, coated with Vietnamese lacquer and 2) present stories about family of the creator.

The results showed that applying transparent Vietnamese lacquer gum to the local materials in the southern regions was a unique stage for base preparation, clearly showing the colour, wire patterns, and shapes of the material underneath. The distinctive characteristics of the artwork are that it uses a special, inconsistent gilding technique to apply 100% gold leaves and scientific gold powder to it. There is a harmonious fusion of the wire patterns in the gold layer and the shapes of the material underneath the artwork, presenting a narrative that reflects the unique identity of the southern region. The artwork also expresses the creator’s impressive emotion regarding family bonds through the memorable contemporary lacquerware painting with unique features that beautifully reflect the culture and identity of the Southern region of Thailand.
