Synthesis of Music Education Research to Thai Classical Instruments (piphat): A Systematic Review

Abstract

The purpose of this study is to synthesize theses in the field of music education, focusing on Thai classical instruments (piphat or a group of percussion and wind instruments used in the classical Thai music band), covering the period from 2018 to2022, using a systematic review method. Nine pieces of literature meeting specific criteria, including full research papers and theses available in the Thai Library Integrated System (ThaiLIS) database, were included. The synthesis was divided into three aspects: 1) general information, 2) research methodology, and 3) research objectives. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics and presented in percentage format. The results indicated that the majority of full research papers and theses from the last five years, particularly those completed in 2018, accounted for the largest volume, comprising four pieces. The institutions that produced the most research in the past five years were Chulalongkorn University, Mahidol University, and Buriram Rajabhat University. Regarding research methodology, qualitative research was the predominant approach across all studies (n=9). In terms of research focus, the primary purposes of education were to study knowledge, gather information, explore learning styles, understand learning characteristics, conserve knowledge, and disseminate knowledge. Based on this study, the results can provide insights into trends in music education research related to Thai classical music over the past five years, offering valuable information for future studies in this field.
