The Gu Zheng Performance in Thai Style: Cultural Context and Social Relationship

Abstract
The gu zheng is one of the Chinese stringed instruments, embracing unique performance practices and melodious sounds reflecting various emotions aesthetically. As the gu zheng employs the pentatonic scale tuning system widely found in Asian music, it corresponds with the particular modes in Thai classical pieces representing various foreign musical dialects such as Lao, Khamen, Chin, and Mon. The musical features mentioned inspire the creative integration between traditional Thai music and Chinese musical instruments through the unique musical performing style of the gu zheng playing traditional Thai pieces. The gu zheng performance has been popular in modern Thai society because it is integrated with Thai and Chinese music cultures, manifesting a good relationship between the two countries in terms of social, cultural, diplomatic relations, economic, and tourism from the past to the present.
