Abstract

Abstract

          The artistic works of the Thai people express their devotion to Buddhism. However, the arts have many extra-religious elements and therefore are viewed negatively by adherents of Theravada Buddhism, especially as a provision in the 7th precept.

          Though the Theravada sect rejects the beauty of musical compositions, there is evidence in scripture of the use of music by Gotama Buddha to help his followers and disciples understand his teaching. Examples of this use of music can be found in Mahapurisalakkhana, Mongkhon Sutra, Seppa Sutra, Atthakatha Dhammap, Magalatthadipani, and Digha Nikaya Silakhandhavagga. In addition, from many myths and legends, the benefits of religion can lead to the understanding of aesthetic principles in various perspectives such as Threefold Training in Music, Akusala Mula of Art, Zen and beauty, arts and morals.

          Those who work in the fields of religion and ethics should take an interest in aesthetics. Without arts, it would be more difficult to transmit religious ideas directly. The knowledge of well-grounded people is transmitted in a more exquisite and memorable way through the arts.
