Abstract

This research aimed to study 1) the effect of learning management of Art of Writing and Composing Poetry course by using contextual teaching and learning on Thai prose and poetry writing attitudes of Thai language arts pre-service teachers, and 2) the effect of learning management of Art of Writing and Composing Poetry course by using contextual teaching and learning on the readiness to be Thai language arts teachers of Thai language arts pre-service teachers. The target group of this research was seven Thai language arts pre-service teachers enrolling in Art of Writing and Composing Poetry course, first semester, academic year 2018. The data were collected by using pre-test and post-test, attitude test towards Thai prose and poetry writing, readiness scale on being Thai language arts teachers and interview guide questions. The 16 lesson plans were used for the experiment. The researcher used descriptive statistics, t-test dependence and Wilcoxon signed-ranks test for analysing quantitative data, while used thematic analysis for analysing qualitative data.

The first finding was that: 1) Thai language arts pre-service teachers’ attitudes towards Thai prose and poetry writing after learning was significantly higher than before learning at the .05 level. This is because of four key reasons-appropriate learning management; happiness in learning; meaningful learning; and studying from role models and practice. 2) The second finding was that Thai language arts pre-service teachers’ readiness to be Thai language arts teachers was significantly higher than before learning at the .05 level. The readiness was categorised into four dimensions: curriculum; pedagogy; assessment and teacher’s related responsibilities. It can be seen that using contextual teaching and learning is effective for developing students’ positive attitudes towards Thai prose and poetry writing as well as the readiness to be Thai language arts teachers.
