The Development of Non-Formal Education Process to Enhance Awareness in Solid Waste Management in the Eastern Economic Corridor (Eec)

Abstract
This research aimed to 1) study the level of awareness of waste management and 2) develop a non-formal education process to enhance awareness of waste management. In the first phase, quantitative research was conducted to survey the level of public awareness in the Eastern Economic Corridor, using 399 people selected through multi-stage sampling. Data were collected using a questionnaire that had been validated through Cronbach’s alpha coefficient and content validity testing. The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics showing numbers and percentages. In the second phase, action research was employed to develop the non-formal education process, by selecting 10 volunteers interested in solid waste management participating. The action research has been made through PAOR spiral process of eight predetermined plans, with data collected via observation notes, photo and audio recordings of conversations, and analyzed qualitatively through thematic analysis.
The results of phase one revealed that the participants, overall, had a high level of knowledge and understanding of solid waste management. They valued and recognized the importance of waste management at moderate to high levels, but exhibited low to moderate levels of waste management behaviors. In phase two, the non-formal education process to enhance awareness in solid waste management consisted of four stages: 1) Analyze of the problems 2) Brainstorming to enhance awareness 3) Challenging to the new role, and 4) Discover the new behavior.
