Development of a Health Care Model for the Dependent Elderlies by the Quality of Life Development Committee, Wat Sing District of Chainat Province

Abstract

          The objective of this participatory action research was to study the situation, problems, and health promotion needs of the elderly population. It aims to develop and test a caregiving model for dependent elderly and examine the effectiveness of implementing this model. The research was conducted in the Wat Sing District of Chai Nat Province. The study focused on two groups: the Wat Sing District Quality of Life Development Committee, consisting of 21 members, and 135 dependent elderly. Data was collected using research-developed tools. Quantitative data were analyzed using statistical frequencies and percentages, while qualitative data were analyzed using content analysis. The findings revealed that Wat Sing District has 2.93% of dependent elderly, suffering from chronic non-communicable diseases, lacking caregivers, and essential life-supporting equipment. There is an insufficient number of managers and caregivers, and a continuous care system is required. The results of the development and implementation of the caregiving model for dependent elderly showed an increase in the proportion of care managers and caregivers to meet the demand. Training programs were conducted to enhance the capabilities of community health volunteers in caring for dependent elderly, resulting in improved activity in daily living and the effectiveness of the caregiving model in Wang Sing District. Consequently, the proportion of dependent elderly decreased from 2.93% to 2.43%. The success factors included the participation and support of governmental organizations, local authorities, and civil society in a collaborative framework involving the Quality of Life Development Center, the Community Welfare Fund, and the Elderly Rehabilitation Clinic. Recommendations from this study suggest the need for increased collaboration among various sectors, including the government, local authorities, and civil society, to actively participate and play a role in improving the health care for dependent elderly, thus enhancing their quality of life.
