Abstract

This paper reviews the literature on multicultural teacher education with a focus on studies from the United States, which has a long history of developing multicultural teacher education both conceptually and practically. The paper begins with a definition and background of multicultural teacher education, followed by a discussion of three prominent paradigms in the field: conservative multicultural teacher education, liberal multicultural teacher education, and critical multicultural teacher education. The paper concludes with a discussion of the implications of multicultural teacher education for teacher education in Thailand, which has only recently begun to promote multicultural teacher education.
