This research aimed to study 1) the effects of the 4 MAT teaching approach on fifth grade students on mathematics achievement as compared before, between and after teaching; 2) mathematics achievement of the fifth grade students who were taught through the 4 MAT teaching approach as compared with the conventional method; 3) learning retention of the fifth grade students who were taught through the 4 MAT approach and the conventional method. The design of the study used the pretest – posttest control group design. The sample of the study were the students of Tassaban 4 School and they were assigned to either an experimental or a control group. The instruments used were the 4 MAT teaching approach and the conventional method, and a mathematics achievement test with a reliability of .82 which had the difficulty levels of .20 - .80 and discrimination levels of .20 – .70.
The results indicated that mathematics achievement of the fifth grade students after being taught through the 4 MAT teaching approach improved higher than those before teaching. The mathematics achievement of the fifth grade students who were taught through the 4 MAT approach gained higher scores than those under the conventional method. Finally, the learning retention of the fifth grade students who were taught through the 4 MAT approach gained higher scores than those who were taught through the conventional method at a significant level of .05.
