Abstract

This academic consists purposes aims to analyze the transformation of brass bands used in the Elephant Ordination Parade in Ban Hat Siao, Si Satchanalai District Sukhothai Province, by examining the social context and factors influencing these changes. The study employed interviews with brass band leaders and band members, along with an analysis of relevant documentary sources. The findings reveal that the parade music has undergone continuous changes from the use of traditional local instruments such as the pi tae and rammana drum, to long drums, and eventually to brass bands. Over time, traditional brass band ensembles have further evolved into modernized forms. Support from government agencies and the tourism sector has played a crucial role in the increasing prevalence of brass bands in the Elephant Ordination Parade, as their performances create a lively atmosphere and effectively meet the expectations of participants. Moreover, contemporary brass bands incorporate electric instruments, woodwinds, sound systems, and vocalists, resulting in performance styles that resemble mobile festival bands “rot hae”, thereby increasing musical diversity and expanding audience engagement across age groups. These transformations reflect the dynamic nature of Thai Phuan musical culture, which successfully integrates traditional ritual practices with modern musical trends. At the same time, such changes contribute to shaping a new cultural identity for the Elephant Ordination Parade and enhancing its role as a significant form of cultural tourism within the community.
