Abstract

The purpose of this research was: to study local textile art in the context of local customs. It consisted of reviving and inventing the identity of textile art of people in the Khmer community in Surin province. They learned the inheritance and sustainability of traditional customs that are social phenomena. It is about the usage of silk to be the composition and building process. We used the concept ‘Invented tradition’ of Eric Hobsbawm and presented local textile art that was used in the festival. We presented with qualitative research, in-depth interview information, and participatory and non-participatory observation about the usage of textile in the rite that occured in the Khmer community. It was from the people who used local textile. We focused on the study of the Khmer local textile art on the invented tradition of Ban Ta Rord, Sawai Sub District, Surin province in the context of 2 important local traditions. They are as follows: (1) Loeng Phanom Sawai tradition (2) San Donta tradition. The study found that the study of invented tradition from the Loeng Phanom Sawai tradition and  San Donta tradition was so important. It made us understand the phenomena of local textile that has a social role and occurs both in community and provincial levels. The invented tradition can be explained as a phenomena at local festivals that have occurred since 2016. It was the invention of the tradition that invented the new activity in the tradition by using the famous silk of the province on the belief system. It reflected the social relations that inseparably connected to the local textile. In this abstract, we would like to present the usage of textile with beautiful artistic patterns and it occult with the spirit of weaver. It can reflect the operations and relationships of people about the context of modern community and local traditions. It is a phenomenon that occurred from the area of tradition. It can expand the knowledge about invented tradition to be wider and it can cause further educational benefit for whoever is interested in these topics.
