อัคคีภัยกับการแปรรูปเมืองกรุงเทพมหานคร

การเปลี่ยนแปลงรูปสัณฐานเมืองนั้น ส่วนหนึ่งมาจากเหตุอัคคีภัยเมื่ออาคารบ้านเรือนเสียหาย บทความนี้ จึงมีวัตถุประสงค์ เพื่ออธิบายการแปรเปลี่ยนรูปเมืองของกรุงเทพมหานคร ที่มีสาเหตุจากเหตุอัคคีภัย ระหว่าง พ.ศ.2435 ในรัชสมัยพระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว จนถึง พ.ศ.2475 รัชสมัยพระบาทสมเด็จพระปกเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว โดยอาศัยข้อมูลจากเอกสารประวัติศาสตร์ โดยเฉพาะราชกิจจานุเบกษา ผลการศึกษา พบว่า เมื่อบ้านเมืองเจริญมากขึ้น จำนวนประชากรเพิ่มขึ้น ทำให้มีการก่อสร้างบ้านเรือนหนาแน่นและแออัด เป็นเหตุให้เกิดเพลิงไหม้และลุกลามครอบคลุมพื้นที่กว้างขวาง อีกทั้ง ยังกีดขวางการเข้าถึงพื้นที่ที่เกิดเพลิงไหม้ โดยเฉพาะในกรณีย่านสำเพ็งพื้นที่ศึกษา ซึ่งเป็นพื้นที่หนึ่งในพระนคร (กรุงเทพมหานคร) ที่ได้รับความเสียหายจากเหตุเพลิงไหม้หลายครั้ง และภายหลังเกิดเหตุจึงมีการขยายถนนและตัดถนนสายต่าง ๆ ขึ้นจากการดำเนินการดังกล่าว นอกจากจะช่วยป้องกันอัคคีภัยไม่ให้เกิดขึ้นและลุกลามขยายพื้นที่แล้ว ยังเป็นจุดเริ่มต้นของถนนสายต่าง ๆ และทำให้เกิดระบบถนน เช่นที่เป็นอยู่ในปัจจุบัน
