Potential of tourism resources and public space and riverfront development to promote tourism of Klong Bang Noi Community, Samut Songkhram Province

Abstract

Klong Bang Noi community is located in the junction of Bang Noi Canal and Mae Klong River. It used used to be one of the main transportation routes and commercial hub along Mae Klong River – Tha Chin River until urban development had sprawled and reached. The normal way of water life, trades, and water transportation were affected drastically in local economy and faded from the riverside community. Therefore, local government and Klong Bang Noi community realized of the importance to bring back business of Klong Bang Noi community to be a tourist attraction to preserve the cultural heritage and promote tourism activities in Klong Bang Noi Community. This paper focuses on exploring potential of their tourism resources of Klong Bang Noi Community, as a part of develop information database and propose design guidelines to create community public spaces and riverfront scape through the provincial authority of tourism development plan and policy. The ideas will bring back waterfront community by using the physical analysis, potential tourism resources, and community public space patterns and riverfront scape. Methods were site survey, interviews and participatory with community. The results found that, Klong Bang Noi Community has many potential tourist resources that can be used to promote, develop and collect the information data for community tourism. The findings can be used as an overview of the approach to improve landscape of public spaces and waterfront scape of Klong Bang Noi community to promote and maintain the cultural identity of Klong Bang Noi riverfront community for sustainable tourism.
