Abstract

The Internet is not only being a tool for information exchange and communication but also a social media, facilitating the creation of social relationships and the expansion of social networks. This paper is an analysis based on a collection of literature of social networks and online communities. Three main points are discussed as follows: 1) development of the term social networks used for replacing traditional locality-based community, 2) definition of social network, comparing with the similarity of online communities definition, and 3) two types of social network expansion via the Internet that are creating and maintaining social relationships.
