Abstract
The purposes of study are to investigate Wong Char-phue Char-au which was music accompanying performance of Karen at Gong Mong - Tha Village, Laivo sub-district, Sangkhla Buri district Kanchanaburi province and to examine role of Wong Char-phue Charau in Karen culture according to ethnomusicology methodology. This is a field study through surveying, interviewing, and analyzing the information during 2006 – 2008 A.D. The results revealed as follows.
1. Wong Char-phue Char-au is the music accompanying performance of Karen including Tong dance, Ayei dance, and Geuy Juoe play. The music ensemble is Idiophone and Aerophone. The idiophones or Char-phue include Ta Phowe (Tabor), Ta-Kue (Small Tabor), and Powe (Four Small Drums in Wooden Case), Mong-Wai (Framed Gong), Gee-Wai (Framed Gong), Patala (Xylophone), Walakeau-jee (Wooden Clapper - Cymbal) and Jang-jee (Cymbal).While the Aerophones or Char-au include Kanewi-Phadoo (Big Oboe) Kanewi-Pi (small Oboe)and Tahlaw (Blowhold).Wong Char-phue Char-au is Karen music instrument influenced from Burmese which assimilates two nations as one culture through music. Most songs that play in the present are songs which musicians at Gong Mong - Tha Village succeeded from Karen music teachers in Sangkhla Buri district which learn from teachers and professional musicians in Burma. The songs are some difference and are performed in ceremony occasions.
2. Wong Char-phue Char-au is influenced in Karen culture at Gong Mong -Tha Village which is performed on traditional days as New Rice ceremonial day, Songran festival days, Buddhist Lent day, Ninth Month day, and the end of Buddhist Lent day. The songs are performed contributing the ceremony circumstance to be as perfect as possible. In addition of amusement, Wong Char-phue Char-au can be played accompanying Tong dance, Ayei dance, and Geuy Juoe play. Sometimes it can be played without performance as well such as paying homage to teacher before performance and in the parade as candle parade, Ga Toue Puei parade, etc.
Wong Char-phue Char-au has influenced on Karen culture at Gong Mong -Tha Village, for example, in inspiring the community to encourage their children to learn more Char-phue Char-au in order to fulfill and reflect their cultural characteristics of community’s strength, unity, and proud of ethnic.Article Details
