Abstract
The present research is an attempt to explore and analyze the roles and functions of symbol in theatre. Theatre in itself is considered a type of symbol reflecting life, ideas, beliefs, culture, ideology and the social reality. Symbol enables theatre and performing arts to communicate and to translate ideas, action and situation more effectively. Symbol and theatre conventions, therefore, become indispensable aspects of theatre. Four fundamental factors are treated as the main variables in the research. The first involves the Text and the so-called the Law of the Text. The second deals with "cultural discourse" which helps theatre creator and audience to share common understanding. The third variable concerns itself with the relationship between "fact" and "fiction" which have to be intricately crafted into a play which is both reasonable and attractive. The fourth factor examines the influences and applications of various level of symbol as a communication tool to formulate and define meanings.
The results from analyses of these variables as well as those important aspects of theatre were then applied in teaching and learning as well as in creating "theatre production" in various forms. Application of these frameworks is further divided into three interrelated phases. The "idea inception" phase focuses on creating theme, concept, script and text. The "text analyseés phase" enables theatre students and practitioners to understand and to translate "text" into action and performance. The "symbolic representation phase" allows for practical usage and application of symbol in several depths. Case examples from the works of the students (29) as well as the researcher (3) are illustrated with emphasis on symbol applications. In-depth analyses of these cases are drawn to exemplify the level and type of meaning s, the process, and the overarching value and concept. These case analyses can be used in trying to understand the complex process in the production of a quality work in theatre.Article Details
