Phuan Singing of Thai Phuan Ethnic Group in Ban Phue District, Udon Thani Province

Abstract

          The study of Phuan singing in Thai Phuan ethnic group in Ban Phue district, Udon Thani province was aimed to 1) study about singing Phuan, 2) study the change of singing Phuan of Thai Phuan ethnic group in Ban Phue district, Udon Thani province. Besides research tools based on related research studies, previous research and fieldwork, data from exhibitions by observation in both participated observation and non-participation observation together with formal and informal interview and data collection in field studies — observed and interviewed from five key-informants, six casual-informants, and two general-informants in Ban Thon area, Ban Thon sub-district, Ban Phue district, Udon Thani province since April, 2018 to January, 2020, the data was scrutinized analytically in descriptive analysis.

          The study results were found that there are two styles of Thai Phuan singing in Ban Phue; slow singing and fast singing style. In both styles consisted of singer, lyrics, music player, and music instrument which are characteristics of Phuan singing. Phuan singing usually appeared in various occasions such as open ceremonies, ethnic and cultural exhibition, and Songkran festival.
