The Development Writing Ability Using Mind Mapping for Undergraduate Students in English for Communication Courses

Abstract

          The objectives of this research were 1) to study the effect of using a mind map to improve the English writing ability of undergraduate students before and after their studies; 2) to study the students' opinions on their English writing learning using a mind map. The sample group was undergraduate students of Nakhon Pathom Rajabhat University in the subject of 1500134 English for Communication, Semester 2, Academic Year 2021, 1 room, 30 students, who were selected by the researcher using the purposive sampling method. The research tools consist of 4 learning plans for learning to write English using a mind map, the pre-test and post-test measure English writing proficiency using a mind map with a consistency index (IOC) at the 1.00 level that means they are consistent and reliable. and a questionnaire to measure the attitudes of undergraduate students in the Basic English course towards the development of English writing skills using the mind mapping technique. An Index of Conformity (IOC) at the 0.93 level that means it is consistent and reliable. The statistics used to analyze the data were mean and standard deviation.
          The research result showed that 1) the effect of using the mind map in improving the English writing ability of undergraduate students before and after studying was a very positive correlation. The students who were taught using a mind map to write English had higher scores than before studying. 2) The learners were satisfied the development of English writing skills by using the mind mapping technique on the average at the 4.54 level that means in the high level.
