The Creation of Abstract Painting from an Analytical Study of Traditional Thai Painting: A Case Study of the Murals of Wat Suwannaram Ratchaworawihan in Bangkok

Abstract

           This research aims to study and create abstract paintings inspired by traditional Thai painting forms and techniques. The process is divided into two parts: (1) a sample study, focusing on the mural paintings in the ordination hall of Wat Suwannaram Ratchaworawihan, selected based on completeness, representation of early Rattanakosin art, and artistic diversity; and (2) creation of artworks within an abstract painting framework, with analysis based on artistic value as assessed by experts, the researcher, and viewers.
            The research findings reveal that: (1) analysis of the original murals highlights key aspects such as color, composition, and traces of objects characteristic of traditional Thai painting; (2) the created artworks demonstrate strong connections to traditional Thai painting, particularly in color, composition, brush techniques, and innovative qualities; (3) viewer satisfaction with the artworks is high; and (4) the value of this collection lies in offering a unique perspective in painting, featuring distinctive characteristics and successfully integrating traditional Thai painting with abstract expression.
