A Creation of the New Music Composition of Sarn Tai

Abstract

          This research article is a part of a study on the creation of music and performing arts from the cultural identity of the Tai ethnic group in the lower northern region. Its aim is to promote the cultural values and national identity of the local area on a global scale. The research employs a qualitative research approach and a creative music research process. Its goal is to create musical artworks that reflect the cultural identity of the Tai ethnic group in the lower northern region, drawn from their way of life. The research findings reveal that the cultural identity of this group can be divided into five aspects: the culture of respecting and worshiping Buddha, beliefs in spirits and ancestors, entertainment and play culture, food culture, and clothing and adornment culture. These aspects serve as the foundation for creating the "Sarn Thai" music work, which consists of seven songs: "Tai Wan Long Nan," "Tai Puan Nang Kuak," "Tai Dam Na Mak Na Paeng," "Lao Wiang Riang Run Chang Han," "Tai Lom Khanom Sen," "Tai Krang Lee La Lai Sin," and " Tai Yai Lae U-pat Taka." The musical structure is divided into three parts: the introductory melody, the musical text, and the concluding melody. Pentatonic scale is used, along with traditional musical instruments and rhythms that are rooted in the culture of the Thai ethnic group in the lower northern region, reflecting their cultural identity.
