An Analysis of Language Use in Films on Social Status Classification and Racism : A Case Study of The Help and Hidden Figures

Abstract
The recent paper aimed to 1) analyze word formations in The Help and Hidden Figures, 2) analyze connotative meaning in The Help and Hidden Figures, 3) analyze language styles in The Help and Hidden Figures, 4) analyze language functions in The Help and Hidden Figures, and 5) compare word formations, connotative meaning, language styles and language functions in The Help and Hidden Figures. The samples were the conversations in The Help and Hidden Figures. The research instruments were the analytical theories – (Yule G, 2010 : 22 ) word formations, (Leech G, 1981 : 22 - 23 ) connotative meaning, (Joos M, 1967 : 23 - 79) language styles, and (Jacobson R, 1960 : 7) language functions. The fundamental statistics employed to analyze the data was frequency. The results were found that 1) the mostly common word formation found in The Help (155 words) and Hidden Figures (179 words) was derivation, 2) 25 sentences expressing the connotative meaning were found in The Help and 18 sentences expressing the connotative meaning were found in Hidden Figures, 3) the mostly common language style found in The Help (199 sentences) and Hidden Figures (288 sentences) was formal, and 4) the mostly common language function found in The Help (179 sentences) was directive and Hidden Figures (196 sentences) was referential. These four strategies, as applied in this study, should be employed in analyzing the language used in movies because they allow academics to examine how English is used broadly in both linguistics and language communication. Furthermore, the strategies of word formation and connotations can be applied to a variety of teaching and learning English subjects.
