A Study of writing strategies in Princess Chalermkhetr Magala’ s stage plays

Abstract

          This research article aims to study writing strategies in two plays “Panji Misarang” and “Rung Fa Doi Sing” composed by Princess Chalermkhetr Magala. The data was collected from the plays “Panji Misarang” and “Rung Fa Doi Sing”. The plays were published in a book to commemorate the royal cremation ceremony in 1957. When she was young, Princess Chalermkhetr Magala was gifted in composing plays. She composed two plays namely: “Panji Misarang”, which was adapted from the book translated from the original Indonesian legend and “Rung Fa Doi Sing”, which was adapted from the novel of the same name. The play writing strategies used by Princess Chalermkhetr Magala were divided into six groups which are strategies for title naming, plots, storytelling, scene continuity creation, content presentation, and humor creation. The narration method is used for the opening of each scene. The storytelling is accompanied by the playing of the Piphat orchestra. The characters in the plays express their feelings and emotions explicitly and they act clearly. The story progresses in chronological order. In terms of language usage, a spoken language is used which is appropriate for the type of plays and their audience. Hence, it is concise and easy to understand. Additionally, the stories progress quickly in both plays.
