Knowledge and attitude of Thai Seafarers to the International Convention for the Prevention of air pollution from ships

Abstract

          This article is aimed 1) to study knowledge, and attitude of Thai seafarers to the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships, 1973, as modified by the 1978 and 1997 Protocols-in Annex VI-prevention of air pollution from ships 2) to study relative between knowledge, understanding of Thai seafarer and their attitude to the Convention. Quantitative analysis was used. Questionnaire to Thai seafarer who hold STCW certificate totally 400 sampling. The data and information were analyzed by means, percentage, frequency and Pearson correlation.
          The study indicated that the knowledge, understanding of Thai seafarer is at medium (𝑥̅=5.33). Deck department at operational level is highest (𝑥̅=6.73). The lowest is deck department at support level. (𝑥̅=4.80).and the attitude of Thai seafarer is at medium (𝑥̅=3.34). The best positive attitude shown that they believe in the marine air pollution effect to global warming (𝑥̅=4.13). In negative attitude shown, Following regulation in annex VI will increase their workload. (𝑥̅=2.57).The relation between knowledge and attitude by Pearson Correlation Coefficient is 0.490. Both variable have their relation in positive. The knowledge of Thai seafarers are increased, Their attitude will be increased in the same direction.
