The Analytical of Power and Influence of Opapatika as per Planes of Existence in Buddhist Scriptures
Main Article Content
Abstract
This research aims to study: 1) To study the planes of existence in Buddhist scriptures, 2) To examine the concept of Opapatika according to these planes, and 3) To analyze the power and influence of Opapatika with in the Buddhist canon. A documentary research approach was employed, utilizing content analysis and descriptive methods. The findings reveal that (1) the realms of existence are divided into four types: (a) the sensual realm (Kāmāvacara), associated with sensory pleasure and discomfort; (b) the form realm (Rūpāvacara), linked to material aspects of consciousness; (c) the formless realm (Arūpāvacara), related to immaterial states; and (d) the supramundane realm (Lokuttara), transcending worldly realms and exclusive to enlightened beings. (2) Opapatika beings, which are self-manifesting entities born without conventional gestation, are categorized into ten types: certain humans, hell beings, hungry ghosts (Preta or Asurakāya), deities, Brahmas, purified beings (Visuddhitepa), Mara, ogres (Yaksha), nāgas, and garudas. Each type has unique modes of origin and existence distinct from ordinary life forms. (3) The power and influence of Opapatika beings are divided into two categories: (a) benevolent beings, such as deities and Brahmas, who exert positive influence derived from meritorious acts and spiritual practices, and (b) malevolent beings, such as hungry ghosts, spirits, and Mara, possessing powers to possess, shape-shift, and materialize. The influence of Opapatika beings profoundly impacts Thai beliefs in the cycle of rebirth, karma, and the afterlife realms, as well as cultural practices like such as the making of merit by offering food to monks during the Tavo festival, the Songkran festival, Loy Krathong, Sart Duean Sip (the tenth lunar month festival), and the Rocket Festival (Bun Bang Fai). Additionally, these beliefs shape social values by encouraging ethical behavior, fostering good karma, and promoting a mindful, prudent approach to life, thereby contributing to improved quality of life and social harmony.
