Abstract

The objectives of this research were to study the development of Thai teaching and curriculum at the elementary school level and the implementation of the curriculum in local schools in ethnic areas in the North. The finding of this study showed that the curriculum was created during King Mengrai’s reign, the first King of Thailand.  The Lanna alphabet (not the current Thai alphabet) was used to teach students in temples rather than in schools. Later, King Rama V wanted to encourage northern people to study Thai. The curriculum, thus, focused on using among governor. The curriculum in the post revolution focused on equality and King Rama VI wanted to build unity. He therefore commanded that everyone had to learn only Thai, be able to read Thai and wanted all people in the Kingdom to be proud to be Thai. The regulations of primary were created during this period as well. The education plan in Lanna was directed the same as in the center of the country until recently. However, the curriculum did not relate to a modern context in northern society, as there were immigrant laborers and ethnic groups living in the same area.
