The purposes of this research were to: 1) analyze the factors affecting achievement in music enculturation from Kru Surang Duriyapan (Thai National Artist) to her voice-majored students; and 2) study the qualitative and quantitative data about the five topics related with how traditional Thai vocal music has been passing from the great vocal teacher to the young generation. The study focused on the achievement factors from three areas including being a music performer, performer-teacher, and music educator. The five major characteristics of Kru Surang’s vocal music enculturation from herself to the students comprised: 1.Being a highly-recognized performer; 2. Her concern in the standard and quality of Thai vocal music; 3. Her focus on cultural issues related to music; 4. Her continuing devotion to developing Thai vocal music; 5. Her teaching methodology that fits the social context. The research methodology included an analysis of academic resources to set the conceptual framework, a quantitative methodology using descriptive statistics to report data from close-ended surveys, and a qualitative methodology using content analysis to report interview results.
The research results indicated that: 1) the achievement factors of music enculturation from Kru Surang Duriyapan (Thai National Artist) to her voice students were splendid and intertwined between the perfection quality of the teacher as a professional performer, the teacher as an expert performer teacher, and the teacher as a well-organized music educator. Quantitative and qualitative data regarding the details for five topics related with the elements of effective enculturation from teacher to students showed a high mean score across five topics (M=4.98).
