Abstract
The purpose of this study was to develop a self-learning module for the English language professional practices of student teachers in elementary education beginning by1) gathering the teaching competence scores of volunteer student teachers before using the self-learning module, 2) identifying the needs of volunteer student teachers, and 3) identifying school students’ expectations on student teachers’ characteristics. Then the self-learning module was initiated based on this particular data and it was in used during second semester practices.The five instruments for data collection were:1) needs assessment of student teachers, 2) questionnaire on school students’ expectations on student teachers’ characteristics, 3) assessment form on teaching competence, 4) questionnaire on students’ satisfaction on student teachers’ characteristics, and 5) interview form on the use of the self-learning module. Mean, percentage, and content analysis were employed for data analysis.The results showed that after using the self-learning module, volunteer student teachers’ scores were higher than the ones before using the module. They also earned the highest scores in all aspects of teaching competence.The self-learning module served student teachers’ needs, so they could deliver lessons learned to professional practices and finally achieve their goals. School students rated their satisfaction of student teachers’ characteristics higher than their expectations on average.
