Abstract

          Phenomenon based learning is an approach of Finnish education after educational reform in the year 2016-2017. The introduction is based on real-world phenomena as a starting point for learning and observing from learners’ different points of view. Learners ask questions or pose problems for searching for information and solving problems through the inquiry process, problem-based learning or project-based learning based on constructivism and interdisciplinary integration. Extended learning beyond the classroom and through the internet world takes place by blended learning, flipped classroom and developing portfolios. The focus is on 21st century skills by linking the phenomena to study with interdisciplinary skills so learners are aware of the facts from rapidly changing information in the digital age. Learners could develop into creators of knowledge and innovators. For example, by using the “Royal Foot Prints” phenomena, learners not only got meaningful learning from studying across interdisciplinary fields that enhanced their understanding and gave them a more holistic view, but also recognized the value of what had been learned through meaningful phenomena in the real world by learning how to learn and learning collaboratively.
