The Life and Jingge Singing Techniques of Su Yuanyuan in Chengdu, China

This research consists purposes were 1. to investigate the life, artistic background, and professional development of Su Yuanyuan and 2. to analyze her Jingge singing techniques within contemporary performance practice in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, China. This study employs a qualitative research approach using a case study design. The key informant is Su Yuanyuan, a performer at the Chengdu Peking Opera Research Institute. The research tools include in-depth interviews and participant observation. Data were collected through fieldwork and analyzed using content analysis. The research findings reveal that 1) Su Yuanyuan’s artistic development is shaped by systematic training in Peking Opera and extensive stage and teaching experience, which contribute to her distinctive integration of traditional and contemporary vocal practices and 2) Her Jingge singing techniques consist of three core components articulation and rhyme control, ornamentation techniques (including glissando, vibrato and appoggiatura), and breath control techniques. These methods are meticulously organized and exhibit a seamless fusion of contemporary vocal styles and traditional Peking Opera techniques. The seminal work Lihua Song (Ode to the Pear Blossom) embodies both fundamental and exemplary significance in Jingge performance and instruction, serving as a paradigm for understanding modern Jingge singing techniques and their dissemination.
