This academic article aims to examine improvisation and the role of keyboard players as musical leaders in contemporary Isan Klong Yao ensembles in Maha Sarakham Province within the context of contemporary Isan folk music. The discussion draws upon ethnomusicological concepts of improvisation and musical interaction, together with an analysis of findings from the study entitled Keyboard Performance Identity of Contemporary Isan Klong Yao Ensembles in Maha Sarakham Province. The analysis reveals that keyboard performance in contemporary Isan Klong Yao ensembles develops improvisational processes through the memorization of Isan folk melodic idioms, supported by sustained practice and field-based performance experience. These processes are grounded in a pentatonic sound system within a scale structure resembling the Dorian mode, together with melodic variation, melodic ornamentation, Mor-Lam style performance patterns, and the insertion of contemporary melodic lines during live performance. At the same time, keyboard players employ techniques such as glissando, cadential phrases and temporary shifts of tonal center to regulate structural transitions and maintain musical continuity, while also providing musical cues that facilitate interaction and communication among ensemble members. Furthermore, the findings reveal a synthesis between the Isan folk sound system and selected concepts of Western musical practice through the use of open fifths and pitch inflections resembling the sonority of blue notes, which contribute to tonal flexibility and enhance the expressive energy of ensemble performance. This article argues that the keyboard in contemporary Isan Klong Yao ensembles functions not only as a melodic instrument but also as the central axis of improvisational processes, a medium of musical communication and a significant mechanism for maintaining the continuity of ensemble performance. Such roles reflect the adaptive transformation of Isan folk musical identity within the context of contemporary musical culture.
