Abstract

This research consists purposes were 1. to study the performance of Phleng Songkrueng (elaborate Thai musical performance) by Mrs.Jamrat Yusuk and 2. to analyze the performance structure of Phleng Songkrueng in the episode Khun Phan Long Thap (Khun Phan on a Military Campaign) from the classical Thai literary work Khun Chang Khun Phaen, as performed by Mrs.Jamrat Yusuk. This is a qualitative research study that utilizes interviews and observations as research instruments. The target group consists of three groups selected through purposive sampling. Data collected from relevant documents, interviews, and observations were analyzed using content analysis. The research findings revealed that 1) Mrs. Jamrat Yusuk’s performance of Phleng Songkrueng integrates three major Thai art forms 1.1) Phleng Choi (a traditional Thai folk song) 1.2) classical Thai music and 1.3) folk theatre. Phleng Choi serves as the narrative core, with solo singing interspersed with dialogue and musical interludes to enhance emotional expression and 2) The performance structure of Phleng Songkrueng Khun Phan Long Thap comprises seven key components 2.1) Script – adapted from the original literary work 2.2) Musical accompaniment performed by a traditional piphat ensemble using the five-tiered nai nawam instrumentation with the addition of a two-faced drum (klong song na) 2.3) Vocal delivery – incorporates Phleng Choi interwoven with spoken dialogue 2.4) Performers selected for their abilities in singing, dancing, and emotional expression 2.5) Costumes designed to reflect the characters’ social status 2.6) Scenery and propspresented in two styles minimalist imaginative settings for general stages, and realistic backdrops for theatrical venues and 2.7) Choreography a combination of classical Thai dance gestures (bot, phleng na phat) and naturalistic movements to portray roles and emotions. This performance reflects a creative approach to traditional folk theatre that preserves its original identity while allowing for appropriate adaptation within contemporary contexts.
