The Effects of Phenomenon-Based Learning on the Reading Comprehension Ability in a Tourism Unit of Secondary 3 Students

Abstract

This research consists purposes were 1. to compare the English reading comprehension ability of students who received phenomenon-based learning before and after the learning period 2. to compare the English reading comprehension ability of students who received conventional learning before and after the learning period and 3. to compare the English reading comprehension ability between students who received phenomenon-based learning and those who received conventional learning. This is a quantitative research study. The research instruments consist of a phenomenon-based learning plan, a conventional learning plan, and an English reading comprehension test. The sample group comprises Secondary 3 Students at Joseph Wittaya School in the first semester of the 2024 academic year, consisting of two classrooms. Simple random sampling was used to assign 37 students to the experimental group and 36 students to the control group. The data collected from the tests were analyzed using descriptive statistics, including mean, standard deviation, t-test and one-way ANCOVA. The results of the study were as follows 1) The group of students who learned by Phenomenon - Based Learning showed their English reading comprehension ability had post-learning higher than pre-learning at the statistically significant at the level of .01 2) The group of students who learned by Normal Learning showed their English reading comprehension ability had post-learning higher than pre-learning at the statistically significant at the level of .01 and 3) The group of students who learned by Phenomenon -Based Learning showed their English reading comprehension ability had after learning higher than the group of students who learned by normal learning with the statistically significant at the level of .01
