An Action Research to Develop English Listening and Speaking Abilities of Grade 6 Students Using Communicative Language Teaching with Task-Based Language Teaching.

Abstract

The purposes of this research were 1. to develop 90% of grade 6 students at Saimunpracharaj School to have the ability to listen and speak English at least 70% by using Communicative Language Teaching with Task-Based Language Teaching and 2. to observe and examine changes in students in 3 aspects; language and discourse, activities and practices, and social relationship and organization arising from the development of the ability to listen and speak English by using Communicative Language Teaching with Task-Based Language Teaching. It was a quantitative research. The research instruments were 1) a learning management plan designed using a Communicative Language Teaching with Task-Based Language Teaching; 2) a students' listening and speaking ability test; 3) an unstructured interview form; and 4) an unstructured observation to observe student changes in three aspects: language and discourse, activities and practices and social relationship and organization. The target group consisted of 20 students from a specific selection in grade 6/1 students in the second semester of the academic year 2021 at Saimunpracharaj School. The collected data was analyzed by using descriptive statistics consisting of percentage, mean, and standard deviation. The results of the research were found as follows: 1) The 95 percent of students had a score of 70 percent or more in listening and speaking English scores. and 2) The students who were organized by using Communicative Language Teaching with Task-Based Language Teaching had relevant and consistent behavioral changes in all three aspects. There had been a better change in students’ language and discourse. Students had a better perspective on communication. There had been a better change in relationships and organization. Students cooperated and helped each other more. The 5 steps activities and practices of Communicative Language Teaching with Task-Based Language were better.
