The Creation of Contemporary Music with Phutai Melody.

Abstract

This research consists purposes were 1. to study principles in composing Phutai music melody and 2. to create contemporary music using Phutai melody. The study was conducted in a qualitative creative design with the principle of western music theories and negative harmony. The data were gathered using field study and interview and used in music composition. The results of the study were as follows. 1) In terms of the principles in Phutai music melody, a variety of music patterns including the setting of tempo and song direction, expression of song emotion, interpretation of melody in music, harmony, melody, chord structure, and music design was found. and 2) in terms of the creation of contemporary music using Phutai melody, five stages were involved. (1) The first stage was the design of the song structure. 3 components namely A, B, and C were considered. The A component expressed the immigration of Phutai people. The component was composed using C Aeolian and C Dorian scales. Moreover, Component B expressed the exploration of settlement meanwhile component C expressed the mixture between the Phutai and external cultures. (2) The second stage was the composing of the melody. (3) The third stage was chording. Chord progression and shifting were used. (4) The fourth stage was the forming of tempo using Phutai Klong Yai (Bass drum), triplets, rhythmic patterns of each instrument, and electronic synthesizer. and (5) stage was rhythm development using three principles of negative harmony, diminution, and syncopation.
