To Apply Music Theory in the Arranging and Performance of Southern Isan folk Songs in the form of Combo Band.

This research consists purposes 1. to examine composition and performance of traditional Southern Isan folk songs and 2. to apply music theory in the composition and performance of Southern Isan folk songs in the form of combo band. is a qualitative research There are research tools, namely structured and unstructured interviews There were 3 research target groups who came from a specific selection. Then use the information gathered from various related documents and interviews for content analysis. The results showed that 1) the common composition and performance of traditional Southern Isan folk songs were the mixture of two ensembles, namely Kantruem and Mahori. These two ensembles focused on playing the main melody of the song along with rhythmic instruments and chorus while other elements such as accompany melody and harmony were occasionally performed. The characteristic of musical texture was monophonic. The arrangement of the songs in each performance was as follows: 1.1) Slow-tempo songs which were always played as the first song for paying respect to teachers and sacred things, 1.2) Medium-tempo songs, 1.3) Fast-tempo songs which were performed to entertain the listeners, and 1.4) The final songs which were performed at the end of the performance. In terms of performance occasion, Kantruem ensemble was popular in festive event while Mahori ensemble was performed in formal events either auspicious or inauspicious, and 2) the application of music theory in the composition and performance of Southern Isan folk songs can be done by finding a common ground between folk music identities and music theory emphasizing on the distinctiveness of the main melody, creating chords, background, intro, link, ending, chord progression, and melody and, then, arranging the music composition accordingly. As a result, the findings revealed the composition model and performance of traditional Southern Isan folk songs and the method of applying music theory to create a different aspect of Southern Isan folk songs for the benefit of further learning and inheritance.
