Abstract

The purpose of this research was to study the need for and the details of English for communication for hospital receptionists in Phetchabun Province in order to develop a short training course on English communication for hospital receptionists using the framework of Target Situation Need Analysis based on Hutchinson & Waters. Qualitative data was collected through a questionnaire and subsequent content analysis. The target group consisted of receptionists from 11 hospitals in Phetchabun, selected by purposive sampling. The result of the detailed needs analysis of English communication for hospital receptionists in Phetchabun Province reveals 9 important topics; 1) asking about health problems, 2) history taking, 3) greeting, 4) suggestion about medical services, 5) physical examination, 6) describing treatment plans, 7) telling directions, 8) how to describe about Pathology and, 9) how to treat yourself when sick.
