Guidelines for Composing Film Music: A Case Study at Banana Sound Studio

Abstract

This research consists purposes were 1. to study approaches to composing music for films 2. to analyze film scoring approaches that can convey a variety of emotions and 3. to create musical works reflecting the emotions of films in diverse styles, based on the composition approaches studied. This was a qualitative study. The research instrument was an interview form. The target group consisted of 6 participants selected through purposive sampling. Data collected from relevant documents, such as films produced by Banana Sound Studio, and from the interviews were analyzed using content analysis. The findings are as follows 1) Compositional Framework Harmonic progression is identified as the most pivotal element in film scoring, serving as the primary tool for emotional articulation. The study integrates core musical elements rhythm, melody and harmony to establish a rigorous framework for the scoring process. 2) Analysis of Emotional Conveyance Effective scoring relies on the synergy between music and narrative events, balanced with technical requirements and the director's vision. The research classifies cinematic atmosphere into nine emotional categories Action, Adventure, Comedy, Drama, Fantasy, Horror, Mystery, Romance and Thriller, providing a comprehensive guide for diverse narrative scenes and 3) Creative Application The researcher composed nine original musical works representing these categories. The creative output was validated through expert evaluation by professionals in music composition, confirming the efficacy of the developed scoring guidelines.
