Abstract

This research consists purposes were to study the phenomenon of “Y” (Boys’ Love) as it appears in traditional Thai theatrical performance, this research employs a qualitative methodology. The research instruments include data recording forms and observation checklists. Data will be collected from various sources, such as documents, textbooks, news articles, scripts of Khon and other traditional plays, academic articles, theses, relevant research reports, books on Thai theatrical arts, performing arts, Thai dance-drama (natyasastra) and Boys’ Love series (Y series). Additionally, relevant media portraying traditional Thai performances and Boys’ Love series from various platforms will be examined. Data collection will take place during the years 2024–2025 (B.E. 2567–2568). The collected data from research instruments and related documents will be systematically categorized and analyzed using content analysis. The findings reveal that the manifestation of BL phenomena in traditional Thai classical dance-drama can be observed through seven dimensions: gender role structure, cross-gender performance, expressive gestures and performance elements, gender performativity and identity fluidity, costume and makeup design, audience reception, and cultural-sociological context. These dimensions demonstrate that BL in traditional Thai dance-drama is not an anomaly but rather a product of reinterpretation within new cultural contexts. The phenomenon reflects contemporary dynamics in Thai classical dance, where artistic forms, performative techniques, and audience perspectives contribute to broader understandings of gender diversity. This indicates a cultural evolution of Thai performing arts in response to the discourse of inclusivity in contemporary society.
