The Development of Communicative English-Speaking Competency by using Situation-Based Learning for Grade 5 Students

Abstract

This research consists purposes were 1. to develop learning activities using situation as a base to promote the ability to speak English for communication effectively according to the criteria of 75/75 2. to study the effectiveness index (E.I.) of learning activities using situation as a base 3. to compare the ability to speak English for communication before and after studying with learning activities using situation as a base and 4. to study the satisfaction of Grade 5 students who received learning activities using situation as a base. This is an experimental research. The research instruments consisted of (1) 12 situation-based learning plans to promote English speaking ability for communication, (2) a situation-based English speaking ability test, and (3) a satisfaction questionnaire. The sample group was 16 Grade 5/2 students of Ban Dek Yotsawadi Kindergarten School studying in the 2023 academic year, second semester, who were selected by cluster random sampling. The collected data were analyzed. The statistics used in analyzing the research data included mean, standard deviation, percentage and t-test. The research results found that 1) The situation-based learning activities to promote English communication ability E1/E2 = 75/75 had an efficiency value of E1/E2 = 80.05/77.81 2) The effectiveness index (E.I.) of the situation-based learning activities to promote English speaking ability for communication of grade 5 students was 0.5359, meaning that students who learned from this learning activity could communicate more by 53.59 percent 3) The ability of grade 5 students to speak English for communication using situation-based learning was significantly higher after studying than before studying at a statistical level of .05 and 4) The satisfaction of grade 5 students towards the situation-based learning management (x̅ = 4.51, S.D. = 0.86) was at the highest level overall.
