Abstract

This research consists purposes 1. to study the development and composition of the Isan long drum and 2. to study dance Characters and applications of Isan long drums in the context of local popular culture. is qualitative research There are research tools consisting of (1) survey form (2) observation form (3) interview form, with the research target group of 32 people, namely 5 people who know the group, the group of practitioners 7 people, the general public group of 20 people, all comes from a specific selection and then take the information collected from research tools and related documents to content analysis. The results showed that 1) long single- head drum performance is an Isan folk troupe that is popularly performed in various traditions or festivals. It started with villagers coming together to play drums for fun and without any form of drummer or dancer procession. Later on, the competition of long single-head drum was started that resulting in a variety of performing formats both drummer and dancer procession transformation. The Long Single- Head Drum performance consists of music, dance movements, costumes and 2) this performance competition in the tradition has been popularly organized so each troupe has adapted its performance from the original that there are only the three types of dance movements: (1) dance movements derived from people’s lifestyles (2) dance movements derived from animals’ movements and (3)dance movements derived from nature to the application of dance movements derived from the Isan master dance, the Pong Lang show, and the combination of old and new dance movements that is more beautiful than the original. Thus, it is popular with people and each community has been encouraged to develop the dance and performance to make it more interesting and popular.
