Development of Ability in Japanese Skimming Reading for Main Idea and Retention on Learning Using Directed-Reading-Thinking Activity for Matthayomsuksa 5 Students

Abstract

The purposes of this study were; 1) to develop ability in Japanese skimming reading for main idea by using DR-TA activities of Matthayomsuksa 5 Students according to the established criterion of 80 percent, and 2) to explore learning retention of Matthayomsuksa 5 Students those learning based on DR-TA activities. The sample group was 30 Matthayomsuksa 5 studying in Art-Japanese Program of Mahasarakham University Demonstration Secondary School. The study was conducted through the classroom action research with 3 circles research method. The research instruments consisted of 1) lesson plans using DR-TA activities, 2) complementary quizzes and checklist for learners’opinion for 3 circles, and 3) test of Japanese skimming reading for main idea ability. The statistics used for analyzing the collected data were mean, standard deviation, percentage and dependent t-test.
The results of the study found that: 1) the sample group learning based on DR-TA activities achieved 89.80 percent of average post-test scores on the test of Japanese skimming reading for main idea ability, 2) the sample group learning based on DR-TA activities showed alike of post-test and passed two-week scores in learning retention.
