Shelters Management for Construction Workers in Samut Sakhon Province

Abstract

This article aims to 1) analyze the housing problems of construction workers in Samut Sakhon province, 2) identify factors affecting the management of housing for laborers in Samut Sakhon province, and 3) create an appropriate housing management model for construction workers in Samut Sakhon province. This research is qualitative in nature. The data collection tools used include in-depth interviews and focus group discussions. The target population for the study consists of four groups: Group 1 - 12 laborers, Group 2 - 3 project managers, engineers, or site supervisors, Group 3 - 3 construction contractors or construction business operators, and Group 4 - 3 government officials responsible for labor welfare and protection. The research findings reveal that 1) the physical condition of housing for construction workers in Samut Sakhon province is not strong and stable due to contractors wanting to reduce construction project costs, resulting in overcrowding as rental spaces are limited, land rental prices are high, and there is no serious supervision of safety for life and property, 2) factors affecting the management of housing for laborers in Samut Sakhon province include limited contractor budgets and high rental prices, and 3) an appropriate housing management model for construction workers would be a removable and reassembleable steel structure, with room walls made of metal sheets and the same for toilet buildings.
