Book Review "Statistics: A Very Short Introduction" (บทวิจารณ์หนังสือ เรื่อง “สถิติ": ความรู้ฉบับพกพา)

Abstract

This article intends to introduce the textbook named "Statistics: A Very Short Introduction" written by Hand, David J., and translated by Wiroj Rujijanakul,  which aims to exhaustively present the concepts and the usages of modern statistics continually developed from the traditional statistics. This book gives the explanation about the overall concepts and applications of various types of statistics instead of the in-depth details of each statistical calculation. This characteristic makes this book outstanding from the general statistical textbooks which often explain only the concept and method of each statistics in detail. The ignorance of the overall concepts and applications of statistics might bring about the negative attitude to statistics, the anxiety of statistics learning, and also the denial of the usefulness of statistics learning. This book points out the applications of statistics to the data in both daily life and academic contexts with the explicit and various examples, since the author expected to enhance the readers’perception of statistics importance and value to their real lives. This book, therefore,       is beneficial in academic research for developing the knowledge about appropriate selection of statistics for the data analysis. Furthermore, it is practically helpful for students, researchers,    and ordinary people to utilize statistics more effectively and extensively.

บทคัดย่อ

บทความนี้มีจุดมุ่งหมายเพื่อแนะนำหนังสือ "สถิติ: ความรู้ฉบับพกพา” เขียนโดย แฮนด์, เดวิด เจ.   แปลโดย วิโรจน์  รุจิจนากุล เป็นหนังสือที่นำเสนอถึงแนวคิดและการใช้ประโยชน์ของสถิติยุคใหม่ที่เชื่อมโยงมาจากสถิติดั้งเดิม โดยมีจุดเด่นอยู่ที่การแสดงให้เห็นถึงภาพรวมมากกว่าการลงรายละเอียดเชิงลึก เนื่องจากที่ผ่านมา การเรียนรู้เกี่ยวกับสถิติในชั้นเรียนทุกระดับมักมุ่งเน้นไปที่วิธีการและรายละเอียดของการคำนวณต่าง ๆ ซึ่งมักได้รับการสะท้อนกลับจากผู้เรียนส่วนหนึ่งว่ามีความซับซ้อน ยุ่งยาก ยากต่อการทำความเข้าใจ และมองไม่เห็นประโยชน์ที่แท้จริงของการเรียนรู้เกี่ยวกับวิชาสถิติ แต่หนังสือเล่มนี้ได้นำเสนอให้เห็นถึงความสำคัญของสถิติในฐานะที่เป็นเครื่องมือสำคัญในการศึกษาค้นหาความรู้ความจริง รวมถึงประโยชน์ต่าง ๆ ที่มีต่อการดำเนินชีวิตของคนในทุกสาขาวิชาชีพ หนังสือเล่มนี้จึงเป็นประโยชน์ทั้งทางด้านวิชาการในแง่การเลือกใช้สถิติในการวิจัยเพื่อสร้างองค์ความรู้ได้อย่างเหมาะสม เป็นประโยชน์ในทางปฏิบัติให้กับนักเรียนนักศึกษา นักวิจัย และบุคคลทั่วไปในการใช้ประโยชน์จากสถิติเพื่อตอบสนองต่อการดำเนินชีวิตในสังคมในแง่มุมที่กว้างขวางขึ้นได้ต่อไป
